Edinburg police arrested a man accused of attempting to abduct a girl from a daycare Thursday evening, according to Assistant Police Chief Oscar Treviño with the Edinburg Police Department.

At about 5 p.m., officers responded to the Albatros Collegio Infantil Daycare Center located at 3151 Centerpoint Drive in Edinburg.

When police arrived, they learned that an unknown intoxicated man had entered the daycare and attempted to abduct a 3-year-old girl who was not his child. That man was later identified as 29-year-old Andres Rodriguez Jr.

Daycare employees were able to retrieve the child back, lock themselves in another room, and call police. Rodriguez then stole a cell phone before fleeing the scene.

By contacting him through the stolen cell phone, authorities convinced Rodriguez to meet them at a nearby Stripes convenience store, according to the criminal complaint.

Rodriguez was arrested and charged with robbery, criminal attempted kidnapping, and failure to stop and render aid from an accident prior to the attempted kidnapping.

A judge set his bond at $155,000.
