U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a 20-year-old woman from Pharr on Wednesday after they found 23 pounds of cocaine inside her vehicle’s trunk at the Hidalgo International Bridge, according to a news release and the federal criminal complaint against her.

Officers say they referred 20-year-old Alondra Mendez of Pharr to secondary inspection after a canine gave a positive alert to her black Volkswagen Jetta.

Inside the trunk, CBP officers found and extracted 10 packages of cocaine weighing 23.33 pounds.

During an interview with officers, Mendez said an acquaintance asked her to cross the vehicle into the United States for an undisclosed amount of money, according to the criminal complaint.

A preliminary detention hearing has been scheduled for July 24.

An attorney representing Mendez wasn’t immediately available for comment.
