Federal agents have arrested three men who allegedly threatened to rape and kill a Guatemalan immigrant, according to court records.
Police in New Bedford, Massachusetts, sent information to Homeland Security Investigations agents in McAllen about a Guatemalan woman being held hostage by smugglers.
Smugglers had threatened to rape and kill the Guatemalan woman unless her family paid them more money, according to federal court records. The Massachusetts police provided federal agents with names and phone numbers for the smugglers.
With the information, Homeland Security Investigation agents tracked the smugglers to a home in Donna, according to federal court records. They called Border Patrol and local deputy constables for backup.
Constables stopped a maroon Chevrolet Tahoe leaving the home, and found the Guatemalan woman.
Federal agents arrested Roberto Chavez-Barrios, 36, a Mexican citizen who previously lived in Edinburg; Victor Francisco Gamboa-Angeles, a Mexican citizen; and Florencia Santiago-Antonio, a Mexican citizen, according to federal court records.
Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos charged them with transporting an illegal alien in violation of federal law.
An attorney for Chavez-Barrios couldn TMt immediately be reached for comment Thursday. Court records don TMt list attorneys for Gamboa-Angeles and Santiago-Antonio.
The criminal complaint doesn TMt indicate what happened to the Guatemalan woman, beyond that she was questioned by investigators about the smuggling organization.
