Santa Maria I.S.D. teacher charged with assault by contact

    A Santa Maria I.S.D. teacher has been charged with assault by contact.

    According to Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio, Santiago Mendoza, Jr. was arrested.

    According to the Santa Maria I.S.D. website, Mendoza is a band teacher at Santa Maria Junior High and Santa Maria High School.

    Lucio said the mother of a 15-year-old girl reported the incident to the sheriff’s office last week.

    It was reported that Mendoza hugged her daughter, put his hands up her shirt and hit her behind, according to Lucio.

    A $500 bond was issued for Mendoza and Lucio believes that bond has already been posted.

    Santa Maria I.S.D. sent the following statement to CBS 4,

    The Santa Maria Independent School District is aware of the situation involving allegations of improper contact by a teacher of a student of the District. The District takes all allegations regarding the safety of our children seriously and will take all necessary steps to ensure all students are safe while attending our schools. Because of student privacy laws and the fact that this involves potential personnel actions, the District cannot specifically comment on the matter at hand, but will state when issues like these arise, the District takes swift action to ensure the safety of all our students.

    The school district tells us Mendoza is currently on suspension pending an investigation.
