Staying healthy during cold weather

A cold front in the Rio Grande Valley has a local doctor reminding the public to get their flu shots.

High winds and cool temperatures are a sign the cool weather has hit the Rio Grande Valley.

Dr. Gustavo Gross from Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen says you need to do more than bundle up to prevent a cold.

"We highly recommend, as well as the CDC, to get your flu shot each and every year," Gross said.

If not treated quickly, the flu can turn into pneumonia, which can be deadly. That's why it's important to get a pneumonia shot every five years.

Dr. Gross says both illnesses are the most common during this time of the year.

"We're seeing a very huge number of patients,” said Gross. “We advise you to see your physician if you happen to have the flu symptoms.”

Some common symptoms include sore throat, dry coughing and headaches.

Dr. Gross strongly encourages people to wash their hands throughout the day to prevent catching an illness.
