Teen driver charged in Edinburg crash that killed 3, including child

A 19-year-old driver allegedly responsible for a deadly two-vehicle crash in Edinburg last week faced a judge on Wednesday.

Luis Javier Gonzalez, 19, of Edinburg was charged with three counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault.

Police say on Aug. 9, Gonzalez swerved on the 300 block Monte Cristo Road and collided head-on with a 2014 Chevy Sonic occupied by four people.

Three passengers of the Chevy Sonic, identified as 55-year-old Maria Isabel De La Garza, 33-year-old Marcilou Powell and 3-year-old Joshua Devin Powell, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the crash, the driver of the Chevy Sonic was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Their current condition is unknown.

Gonzalez’s bond was set at $1.7 million.
