Man charged in connection with theft of a tortoise from Gladys Porter Zoo

    Update:

    23-year-old Julio Cesar Marroquin has been charged with theft, a state jail felony, after stealing an endangered male radiated tortoise from the Gladys Porter Zoo.

    The tortoise was reported missing on Tuesday, Feb. 6. and was returned to the zoo on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

    Marroquin was arraigned this morning and his bond was set at $10,000.

    A tortoise that was reported stolen was returned home on Wednesday to the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville.

    Brownsville police said the tortoise was located on Wednesday.

    Authorities said the tortoise, which is a male Radiated Tortoise, is an endangered species valued at $10,000.

    Police said the tortoise was unharmed.

    The case remains under investigation.
