UPDATE: 72-year-old man charged in connection to fatal crash in Brownsville

Brownsville police say a 72-year-old man has been charged in connection to a fatal crash that occurred Thursday afternoon, according to a news release.

At about 12:28 p.m., Brownsville police responded to the 5200 block of Padre Island Highway regarding an auto-pedestrian accident.

Witnesses say a man driving a vehicle, identified as 72-year-old Gustavo Muñoz, veered off the road and struck a 29-year-old woman and her two-year-old son "who were walking on the shoulder of the road," according to the news release.

The woman and her son sustained serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals.

The two-year-old boy died at the hospital. His mother remains in the hospital in critical condition, according to the news release.

Muñoz was arrested and charged with criminal negligent homicide, and aggravated assault causes serious bodily injury, according to the news release.
