Veteran battling cancer to receive new home

A local veteran battling stage 4 cancer received a new home on Thursday.

A local veteran battling cancer will soon be in a new home.

John Castillo is a military veteran of the U.S. Army and has worked as a paramedic and firefighter for 23 years.

As Castillo is now battling stage 4 cancer, Habitat for Humanity of the Rio Grande Valley, H-E-B and the greater Mission Chamber of Commerce gathered Thursday to present Castillo with the location of his new home in the hopes it will bring comfort to his family.

Castillo called the experience overwhelming.

“It’s kind of overwhelming because I’ve always been on the other end of giving and trying to be there for other people,” Castillo said. “So, it’s a little overwhelming for you to get all the attention all of a sudden and to be put in that situation where people are helping you and you’re just like, ‘Wow.’”
