Woman sentenced after 2016 car crash left one dead


    Melissa Iris Brown was sentenced on Thursday after a car crash left one man dead in 2016.

    A woman responsible for a car crash that killed one man in 2016 was sentenced in Cameron County on Thursday Jan. 10.

    On Sept. 19, 2016, officials were dispatched to a one vehicle roll-over crash in San Benito on FM 510 east of FM 3462.

    According to a police report, when officials arrived on scene, Melissa Iris Brown, the driver, appeared to have been intoxicated.

    At the time of the crash, Joe Omar Martinez and Alicia Cuellar were in the car with Brown. Martinez and Cuellar were both ejected from the vehicle. Martinez died as a result of the crash.

    Brown was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault with a vehicle. She was indicted in June 2018 and plead not guilty when she was arraigned the following month.

    On Thursday, she was sentenced to 16 years for both charges.
