McAllen Holiday Parade
The city of McAllen is expecting nearly 250,000 people at this year’s holiday parade.
The event is known as the largest illuminated and helium balloon parade in Texas and city officials are urging people to plan ahead.
"So, your best bet to get in and around and to the McAllen Holiday Parade festivities is to take the free park and ride Polar Express Shuttle being offered by the city of McAllen and our Metro Connect,” said Xochitl Mora, the director of communications for the city of McAllen. “Head out to the South Texas College Pecan Boulevard Campus and just hop on the shuttle."
While large public events have lately been a target for mass shootings, the McAllen chief of Police Victor Rodriguez says there will be law enforcement agencies everywhere to make sure people stay safe.
"We've got numerous, varieties of law enforcement applications that will be deployed here tomorrow,” Rodriguez said. “We will be on the ground, we will be on the air, we'll be everywhere tomorrow."
The one-and-a-half-mile long parade begins Saturday at 6 p.m.
Free seating is on a first come, first serve basis, but reserved seating is available for purchase at the McAllen Convention Center Box Office.
Christmas on the Park, which includes carnival rides, live entertainment, food and craft vendors, will be open Saturday from noon to midnight.
