The Mexican Army rounded up and disarmed about 157 Matamoros police officers.

Mexican media outlets are reporting that the roundup started early Wednesday morning.

Mexico's El Universal newspaper reported 157 police officers were taken off the street and disarmed.

The newspaper said military officials did not give a reason for the action.

The Matamoros Police Department's Third Watch Commander Alfredo Rodriguez Cruz told reporters that Tamaulipas State Police were called in to help provide security for the Mexican border city of more than 500,000 people.

Matamoros is located south of Brownsville, Texas.
