SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Just how are furloughed government workers spending their time since the federal government shut down? Well, they seem to be looking at porn, at least according to Pornhub.

According to the online pornography curator, traffic is up and peak hours have changed since Congress and President Trump failed to fund the nation's government Dec. 29. It said from Jan. 7 to Jan. 11, pornography consumption on its site is up nearly 6 percent

It stated the changes in traffic and peak viewing times are similar to other events, like Winter Storm Stella, that allows people to stay up later and sleep in later the following day -- when people don't have to go to work.

Utah's leaders declared that pornography is a public health crisis. Gov. Herbert signed a state resolution to that effect. Herbert compared porn to drugs and alcohol. The adult industry refuted Utah's declaration in 2016. Pornhub did not provide data for Utah or other states during the shutdown but did have specific information for the Washington D.C. area, with a high concentration of government workers.

PornHub said it measured traffic from a Monday through a Friday because weekend data wouldn't show a difference from before and after people aren't working. It also didn't use data from the period of December holidays, so it measured time and traffic from Dec. 3 to Dec. 7 and Dec. 10 to Dec. 14, taking holiday traffic out of the comparison.

It said visits from women were up 4.2 percent above average and visit time increased from 10 minutes, 37 seconds to 11 minutes, 10 seconds.

According to the report, Pornhub's peak traffic period is typically from 10 p.m. to midnight. After the government shutdown, late-night traffic increased by up to 14 percent above the average. Traffic in the afternoon, while people are usually at work, was also up, showing a 7 percent increase at 1 p.m.

Utah investigators said the demand for child pornography was on the rise in 2018. There was a legislative movement to lower the penalties for possession of child pornography, but that effort was dropped.

A BYU study found that pornography users who are religious are more likely to call themselves a pornography addict and are more likely to have relationship difficulties related to pornography.

A 2009 study by the a Harvard Business School professor said Utah had the highest pornography subscription rate per 1,000 homes that were broadband users.
