Report: 9 percent of Texas' undocumented live in RGV

About 9 percent of undocumented immigrants in Texas live in the Rio Grande Valley, according to data released by the Migration Policy Institute, a Washington-based think tank.

Only the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston metro areas have more residents who aren't legally present in the United States, according to U.S. Census data crunched and analyzed by the think tank.

The Texas Tribune mapped the data, which was published Wednesday.

The data showed that Hidalgo County has younger undocumented immigrants than Cameron County " and, unsurprisingly, they haven't lived in the United States as long.

Undocumented immigrants in Hidalgo County and Cameron County have about the same levels of education and home ownership.

Other data included:

{>} About 22 percent of the undocumented immigrants in Hidalgo County have lived in the United States for 20 or more years.

{>} About 27 percent of the undocumented immigrants in Cameron County have lived in the United States for 20 or more years.

{>} About 56 percent of undocumented immigrants in Hidalgo County own their own homes.

{>} About 53 percent of undocumented immigrants in Cameron County own their own homes.

{>} About 12 percent of the undocumented immigrants in Hidalgo County are 16 years old or younger.

{>} About 5 percent of the undocumented immigrants in Cameron County are 16 years old or younger.

{>} About 67 percent of undocumented immigrants in Hidalgo County don't have a high school diploma.

{>} About 68 percent of undocumented immigrants in Cameron County don't have a high school diploma.

{>} About 6 percent of the undocumented immigrants in Hidalgo County have a college degree.

{>} About 7 percent of the undocumented immigrants in Cameron County have a college degree.

Statewide, another 24 percent of undocumented immigrants live in Harris County, which includes Houston, and 23 percent live in Dallas County and Tarrant County, which includes Fort Worth.
