CBP officers found nearly $1 million in unreported currency hidden while inspecting a vehicle.

Officers discovered 53 suitcases containing $988,550 in unmarked bills Jan. 25 hidden inside a 2010 Nissan Maxima.

Officers arrested the driver, took the money and turned the case over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) special agents for further investigation. It is not a crime to carry more than $10,000, but it is a federal offense to not declare any currency or mony totaling $10,000 or more to a Border Patrol officer while entering or leaving the U.S. or to hide it intently to avoid telling authorities.
