UTRGV Volleyball Sweeps Chicago State

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) volleyball team swept Chicago State University (CSU) 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-14) on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Off to its best start in NCAA DI program history, UTRGV (14-7, 4-2 WAC) is now 5-0 at home, tying for the best NCAA DI home start, which was previously accomplished from Sept. 3-Oct. 29, 1993. UTRGV also has an NCAA DI program record-tying four conference wins for the fourth time in program history and second year in a row.

Sophomore Ragni Steen Knudsen led UTRGV with 16 kills without an error on 34 attacks for a .471 hitting percentage. Senior Alisha Watson recorded 12 kills with six digs and five blocks. Junior Bojana Mitrovic posted her sixth double-doubles with 10 kills and 10 digs.

Corey Davis led CSU (3-17, 1-5 WAC) with six kills, 13 assists and four digs. Juma Armando and Paige Eyring also had six kills each.

After CSU scored the first point of the match, a Knudsen kill and an ace helped UTRGV score five in a row to take the lead. CSU pulled within three at 8-11, but a Mitrovic kill and three Knudsen kills helped UTRGV go on a 6-1 run to go up 17-9. CSU pulled within 14-20, but three Mitrovic kills helped UTRGV close out the set.

The second set was tight early, with CSU taking a 6-3 lead on a block by Davis and Alexandria Cliff. Knudsen responded with four kills to power a 15-6 run to put UTRGV up 18-12. CSU climbed to within 15-9, but two more Knudsen kills helped UTRGV close out the set.

UTRGV jumped out to a 12-4 lead on the power of three Knudsen kills in the third set. Then, after CSU pulled within 8-13, Watson recorded five kills to help UTRGV go on a 12-6 run to end the match.

UTRGV looks to complete the sweep of the three-match home stand when it hosts UMKC on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Doors open at 11 a.m.
