Comeback falls short as UTRGV Women’s Basketball falls to CSU Bakersfield in WAC Tournamen

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Down 18 in the third quarter, seventh-seeded The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team rallied back to within six before falling to second-seeded CSU Bakersfield in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Quarterfinals 70-59 on Wednesday at Orleans Arena.

Sophomore Megan Johnson led UTRGV (14-16) with 14 points and a career-high tying 11 rebounds. Junior Quynne Huggins scored 14 points with six rebounds. Junior Krisynthia Sampson scored 12 points with eight rebounds. Graduate student Weslaco alum Laura Van Tilburg scored 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Jazmine Johnson led CSU Bakersfield (17-12) with 23 points and five steals. Malaysia McHenry scored 21 points with eight rebounds.

CSU Bakersfield lead by as much as 18 at 56-38 late in the third quarter. Van Tilburg responded with back-to-back layups to spark a 14-2 run that brought UTRGV within 58-52.

UTRGV got as close as six at 60-54 on a Sampson layup, but CSU Bakersfield closed the game on a 10-5 run.

Jazmine Johnson scored 13 points over the first seven minutes to help CSU Bakersfield jump out to a 16-8 lead.

Huggins responded with two three-pointers to fuel a 12-2 run that put UTRGV up 20-18 at the end of the first quarter.

CSU Bakersfield scored the first five points of the second quarter as part of a 20-2 run, however, to go up 38-22 on an Aja Williams layup at the 3:48 mark.

Huggins hit a three and freshman Brownsville Saint Joseph alum Valeria Tapia made a layup to bring UTRGV within 11.

UTRGV was again within 11 after a pair of Van Tilburg free throws made the score 40-29 in the opening minute of the third quarter.
