(CBS 4 Sports) - Brownsville Lopez has been without a head football coach since February 14, when Jason Starkey elected to step away from coaching football and move into a new career path. Three month later Brownsville ISD has yet to fill the vacancy and it will go unfilled for a bit longer.

Monday afternoon, the Brownsville ISD school board voted 6-1 to table the superintendent's recommendation for the new head football coach/athletic coordinator at Lopez. The motion to table came immediately after the action item was brought up. No candidate was named during board discussion.

The board mentioned during discussion that they would hope for the search committee and superintendent to look closer at internal candidates at Brownsville ISD.

Lopez is one of two current football openings in the Rio Grande Valley. Late last week Port Isabel head coach Jaime Infante resigned his position as head coach and athletic coordinator after only one season with the Tarpons.

The Brownsville ISD board also voted 4-3 to approve the hiring of Gilbert Leal, a former head coach at Harlingen South and Mercedes High, to be the new Administrator of Athletics. Current Rivera head coach Tom Chavez had been serving as the interim athletic director.
