Weslaco OC Shelby Picked To Lead McHi Football Program


(CBS 4 Sports) - Patrick Shelby was introduced Monday at the McAllen ISD School Board meeting after being approved as the new head coach of the Bulldogs earlier in the meeting. Shelby has been the offensive coordinator on Michael Salinas' staff at both Weslaco High and Edinburg Vela.

“I’ve been around good mentors, good head coaches,” Shelby said in a press release sent by the district. “I’ve seen what it takes to run good quality programs. I’m ready for the challenge.”

Shelby was chosen from 48 applicants that included Rio Grande Valley head coaching veterans like Spencer Gantt and Jason Wheeler. Shelby was selected among three finalists which included Gantt and Edinburg Vela offensive coordinator Sean Van de Merghel.

Shelby has been coaching for 11 seasons with seven as a high school varsity assistant coach along with four in the college ranks. Shelby played collegiality at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana and at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.

Shelby replaces Kevin Brewer who was with the Bulldogs for six seasons and tallied a 31-34 record.
