UTRGV Men and Women Hoopsters Win Saturday

(CBS 4 SPORTS) - It was a clean sweep for both basketball programs at UTGRV on Saturday. The women's basketball team rallied from a 17 point deficit behind a career high 31 points from Sophomore forward Megan Johnson to knock off in-state rival UTSA 70-58 to win the Battle on the Border Tournament championship.

The UTRGV women are 8-2 for the first time in their history. Johnson was named the tournament MVP with her 31 point outing and joined teammats Quynne Huggins and Jameka Dowell on the all-tournament team.

The UTRGV womean are back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at North Dakota State.

Meanwhile the men's basketball team avoided a late rally from the Rice Owls to end a four game losing skid with a 69-67 win at Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston. Nick Dixon scored 19 points to lead for UTRGV.

Sophomore Xavier McDaniel Jr. scored 13 points with seven rebounds. Senior Dan Kimasa finished with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

The UTRGV men kick off a three-game home stand on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
