UTRGV Women Fall to Islanders 71-41; Men Face Aggies Thursday

CORPUS CHRISTI (CBS 4 Sports) - The UTRGV women's basketball team struggled to find their shot in the second half as they were outscored 44-16 in the final two periods in a 71-41 loss to Texas A&M Corpus Christi Wednesday night.

The now 6-2 UTRGV women were going for a program best 7-1 start after starting 6-1 for the second time in UTPA/UTRGV history.

Junior forward Quynne Huggins led UTRGV with 12 points and five rebounds and Junior Jameka Dowell scored 11 points.

Emma Young led the Islanders with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Brittany Mbamalu added 14 points

UTRGV's was within two points at the end of the first half, and had the lead with 21 seconds remaining in the second quarter when a Huggins three made the score 25-24, but Corpus Christi responded with a 24-5 run and did not relinquish it the entire second half

UTRGV returns home on Friday when they face UMass at the UTRGV Fieldhouse on day one of the Battle on the Border of the Tournament.

The UTRGV men's basketball team will face #9 Texas A&M in College Station on Thursday.
