UTRGV Athletics to Retire Fred Taylor's Jersey
(CBS 4 Sports) Fred Taylor, a star in the late 60s for Pan American College will be the third former Bronc to have his number retired by his alma mater the athletic department announced on Wednesday. Taylor, a former NBA-player with the Suns will see No. 30 jersey raised into the rafters of the UTRGV Fieldhouse and will join Luke Jackson (54) and Otto Moore (34) as the only basketball players to have their numbers retired at UTPA/UTRGV
Taylor's ceremony will take place before the homecoming men’s basketball game against Utah Valley on Saturday, Feb. 16.
“I think it’s an honor to be mentioned with the other guys who have had their numbers retired,” Taylor said in a release. “We have had so many great athletes come through this university in all sports and I want to personally thank [UTRGV Director of Athletics] Chris King for making this happen. Only two numbers had ever been retired before he arrived, and that number has doubled under his watch. His diligence made this moment come to fruition.”
The Houston native finished as Pan American's third (now fourth) all-time leading scorer with 1,721 points. According to the record books Taylor also ranks third in field goals made (681), fourth in free throws made (359), and seventh in rebounds (699). He was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
