UTRGV Men's Basketball to Host Oklahoma Sooners Next Season

( CBS 4 Sports) The UTRGV men's basketball team will host the Oklahoma Sooners at the start of the 2018-19 basketball season according to a source close to the program. CBS Sports Jon Rothstein was first to report.

The game will emanate from the new Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, the future home of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA G-League. The game is still pending an announcement from both schools and a a lease agreement between UTRGV Athletics and the the new facility.

UTRGV was originally scheduled to host OU at the start of this past season, however the game was postponed due to the delays in the arena's construction.

Current UTRGV head coach Lew Hill is a former assistant coach of OU head coach Lon Kruger. Kruger's first head coaching job was in Edinburg at what was then Pan American University and spent four years as the Broncs' head coach. Kruger coached teams have reached the NCAA tournament 18 times in his career with Kansas State, Florida, Illinois, UNLV, and Oklahoma.

UTRGV finished their second season under Hill at 15-18 with an opening round lost in the College Basketball Invitational.
