UTRGV Men's Hoops Releases Schedule; Won't Play at Bert Ogden Arena
(CBS 4 Sports) - What was supposed to be a showcase game for college basketball in the Rio Grande Valley with a Big 12 opponent coming to South Texas to play the home squad in a sparkling new facility will not happen as initially plan. UTRGV men's basketball will still play host to the University of Oklahoma, an NCAA tournament team coached by NCAA coaching legend and former Pan American head coach Lon Kruger; however the game scheduled for November 9th will be played at the UTRGV Fieldhouse and not in the new arena.
UTRGV released their complete schedule on Tuesday
When UTRGV initially announced the Oklahoma match-up it made sure to note that it was "pending a lease agreement" with Bert Ogden Arena. The match-up was also delayed a year because of the delay in construction of the arena.
“We explored the option of moving our men’s basketball games into the new Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, but determined that, at this time, staying in the UTRGV Fieldhouse is a better, more affordable option for our fans, and better for our athletics program as well," UTRGV Director of Athletic Chris King said in a statement sent to CBS 4. "Our facility has recently been upgraded with new lighting, a new sound system, and a new concessions area to help improve the fan experience. We look forward to welcoming the community back to campus for an exciting 2018-19 season.”
UTRGV head coach Lew Hill, a former assistant under Kruger at Oklahoma, is thrilled to welcome his former head coach back to Edinburg.
“It’s very rare that a top 10 program like Oklahoma comes down here,” UTRGV head coach Lew Hill said in a release. “[Oklahoma head] coach [Lon] Kruger got his start here and I’ve worked with him, so we’re looking forward to having him come back. This is a special treat for our fans.”
UTRGV will also play a home and home series with South Texas rival Texas A&M Corpus Christi. UTRGV will play at Corpus on November 12 and will host the Islanders on November 23rd. UTRGV will also host North Dakota on December 5th, Texas State on December 15th, Rice on December 18th and McNeese State.
