EDINBURG, Texas (Mar. 12, 2019) - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (32-16) faced the Salt Lake City Stars (25-21) at home and came up short, 126-138.
Dakarai Tucker lit up the scoreboard with his 10 points in the first quarter of action between the RGV Vipers and Salt Lake City. The Vipers were able to come up with five steals in the quarter on their way to claiming a slim 27-26 lead once the quarter ended. Both sides had a total of 10 rebounds while the Stars outshot the Vipers from the field 56.2% to 46.2%.
Salt Lake City crept away with a 68-53 halftime lead behind nine from behind the arc, five of which came from the hands of Jairus Lyles who tallied 22 points in the half to lead all scorers for the Stars. Utah Jazz two-way player Tyler Cavanaugh totaled 11 points before the break to help pad the lead.
For Rio Grande, Tucker ended the half with 19 total points to lead the offensive effort for the Vipers. His teammate, Gary Payton ll, racked up 10 points, six assists before going into the half.
Nobody was willing to let off the throttle tonight as the fourth quarter rolled around and both teams were still in an intense battle. Ultimately, the visiting attack was overwhelming for the Vipers who found themselves on the losing end of this one, 126-138.
For Salt Lake City, Jazz two-way player Naz Mitrou-Long played 28 minutes and locked in 15 points, three rebounds, seven assists. Cavanaugh ended his night with 13 points, 11 rebounds to earn the double-double. Isaac Haas tallied 19 points, 10 rebounds. Jazz assignee, Grayson Allen, totals included 16 points, two rebounds, three assists. Lyles ended the night on a high note, he had a career-high 41 points for the Stars.
Tucker closed out his point total with 29 points to help pad the deficit. Michael Frazier quietly tallied 30 points to lead all scorers tonight for the Vipers. Payton ll finished the night with 22 points and eight assists. Another standout for the Vipers was Roger Moute a Bidias who came off the bench and scored 13 points, six assists. Houston Rockets two-way player, Vincent Edwards led the Vipers with seven rebounds.
